Q and A with William
Why did you become a lawyer?
Law as a career always had appeal. The potential to be a persuasive advocate and representative for people from all walks of life who may struggle to effectively communicate for themselves in legal arenas was a motivating factor. Probably somewhat cliched, but it is satisfying when you can help people overcome whatever daily challenges they may face. Unlike some other careers, law involves not only technical analysis but advocacy, mediation and counselling – a multi-faceted approach.
When you are not being a lawyer what do you like doing most?
Where to start? I have many hobbies outside of the law including music, motorsport and working on classic cars and retro caravans – which all provide a good balance to the law.
Where is your special place in the Wellington region?
It is pretty hard to beat Oriental Parade on a stellar Wellington day!
What is your favourite shop/restaurant?
I love Bunnings - there is nothing you can’t find there!
How would you describe your style of practice?
Thorough, yet practical. I don’t believe it is the role of the lawyer to unnecessarily complicate transactions. In my experience particularly with litigation, there is a risk that lawyers can at times be so positional that more cost-effective and pragmatic solutions are overlooked, often at a client’s peril.
If you had to give a first homebuyer a single piece of advice, what would it be?
Don’t be in a rush and do your due diligence! There are many properties out there for you. It is far better to take the time to do your due diligence thoroughly than to sign up to something that you will later regret. Remember the old adage: a stitch in time saves nine.
What is different about the HomeLegal service that makes it so popular?
